The Adventure of the Empty House
For my first Sherlock Holmes mystery story, I opted for "The Adventure
of the Empty House," which appears in the novel The Return of Sherlock
Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle.
This mystery tale starts off with Dr. Watson investigating a bizarre murder
case in London. As Dr. Watson investigates the case, he is surprised when he
finds out that Sherlock Holmes is still alive after he thought he was dead all
those years after the Reichenbach Falls incident when he killed his nemesis,
Professor Moriarty. Sherlock Holmes tells Dr. Watson how he managed to escape
and stay away from his followers from Professor Moriarty. Sherlock Holmes then
devises a plan with Dr. Watson to catch Colonel Moran, an evil criminal who
wants to eliminate him.
I thoroughly enjoyed this short story since it was quite thrilling from the
outset. One of the main surprises for me was the discovery that Holmes was actually
alive. It was easy to guess how surprised Watson must have been after believing
for all this time that his comrade was dead. The plot itself was rather
interesting, although what really caught my eye was their reunion and how much
respect they had for each other.
Apart from that, I was impressed by the cleverness of Holmes who thought
through everything in advance, leaving the criminal behind several steps back.
This short story emphasizes the importance of patience and attention when
trying to come up with solutions to tricky issues. Overall, the short story
"The Adventure of the Empty House" was enjoyable, exciting, and
unforgettable.
